January 9: the day you’re most likely to be cheated on!

Each new year is synonymous with new beginnings. While some see this period as an opportunity to make good resolutions, others use it to try something new… as committing the act of infidelity! At least that’s what the latest study conducted by Gleeden, Europe’s leading online dating site for extramarital encounters, has revealed. The site which boasts more than 3.3 million members sees a significant increase in activity early in the year. But beware, there is even a particularly threatening day to a couple’s well-being! Explanation.

Lose some weight, join the gym, quit smoking… find a lover! Some New Year’s resolutions may be surprising. Among them, the choice to engage in infidelity, an act which Gleeden says peaks in the month of January according to their observations. This year, one day in particular is very risky for couples: January 9. It’s true, according to data collected in recent years, the second Monday after the Christmas holidays appears to be a key date for unfaithful partners. On Monday the 11th of January 2016, the site also recorded an increase in registrations of more than 320%! This trend is observed throughout the month of January, and happens for various reasons.

Infidelity, an unexpected New Year’s resolution

The end of the year is an ideal time to take inventory of one’s personal life. After a holiday season often devoted to family, January seems like the perfect time to refocus on oneself and one’s own desires. A time which leaves little room for frustration. Thus, among the more than 13,000 Gleeden members surveyed, 71% admit to being more active on the site at the beginning of the year*.

New year, new found freedom?

Excessive year-end celebrations stifle couples spurring a greater desire for freedom: this is the reason given by more than half of the respondents explaining a renewed interest in the site at the beginning of the year. Others cite the desire for something new in their lives (26%). Lastly, 19% say they feel more inclined to try new experiences at the start of the year.

«This sharp increase in site usage early in the year is not surprising » – says Solene Paillet, director of communications at Gleeden – « By registering with Gleeden or spending more time on the online platform, members are seeking a means to inject a little excitement into their everyday life. Routine may weigh down on individuals, or be rather oppressive when it follows extended periods devoted to family life. This is the result of a legitimate human need: to have fun and think of oneself.»

The message is clear: if you want to avoid infidelity in your relationship, keep your partner close this Monday the 9th of January!
